Cloud Hosting vs Traditional Web Hosting – Things to know

September 10, 2015 by Siddharth 1 Comment

With increasing pressure to reduce the business expenses, companies are now looking beyond traditional hosting, particularly because the cloud hosting is often considered as more cost efficient. In reality both the types of hosting has their own pros and cons, and they all need to be considered minutely and matched with the specific requirements of a business before taking a decision. This article will present a brief discussion on cloud hosting vs traditional hosting, which can be helpful to understand the better option for your business.

What is traditional hosting?

As it is known, traditional hosting comes in two forms: dedicated hosting and shared hosting. For dedicated hosting, which is the best form of traditional hosting the client has to pay the charge for the total resources allotted, no matter if they are using it or not. The client also gains exclusive control over the resources that have been allotted. In case of shared hosting, which is commonly followed by small and medium enterprises, client pays only for a particular amount of space within a server and the resources of the server are shared within all the clients. This second method is surely more cost efficient. inbetween Dedicated and shared hosting comes the VPS where its partly dedicated with partly shared resources.

Drawbacks of Traditional hosting Over Cloud

Cloud Hosting vs Traditional Web Hosting

The primary drawback in case of dedicated hosting is that the server and the resources that have been allocated to the client needs to be monitored, configured and upgraded by the client. Hence the company needs a dedicated employee for administration of the server and its resources. The problem with shared hosting is that as the resources are shared within different websites, an increased traffic to other websites can cause performance issues for your website. If there are any security issues with any of the other clients sharing the same resources your website will also be affected.

The other problem is that if your website experiences a sudden upsurge in traffic, you will have to purchase more server space and resources; but if the traffic drops again you will not be able to reduce it.

So, flexibility is an issue with Traditional Hosting

The Need for Cloud hosting

To present a discussion on cloud hosting vs traditional hosting, a point that is vital to mention is that the level of scalability offered by cloud hosting is not attainable through traditional hosting. The cloud hosting services are much flexible and a client can pay according to the server space and resources they have used, instead of buying a particular space and resource from the beginning. Apart from the best flexibility, cloud computing also offers better reliability, because in cloud computing the load is distributed across cluster of several servers; and hence even if there is a single server failure, your website will not be affected. Any issue with any of the websites on the cloud will not affect your website either.

The cloud hosting companies also offer Infrastructure-as-a-Service, under which they maintain the hardware as well as software and administrative aspects of the cloud and the client only needs to pay for utilities such as the electricity. The primary issue that is coming up with cloud computing is the concern of data privacy, which is no doubt a vital aspect to consider.
