BSNL 3G Unlimited Plan Tip – Using Micro Sim

Hope most of you might be using our old BSNL 3G Chennai Hack to use your Gprs data plan at 3G speed. This tip will help others for whom the above trick does not work. BSNL recently Limited the unlimited Plan ( Which we enjoyed couple of months back ) for 3G connections to maximum of 15 GB per month for 1503 INR ( May vary at your place ). Here am sharing a simple tip to enjoy BSNL 3G speed on your mobile or on Data Card for just 999 INR ( May vary at your place ).

The Tip – Micro Sim for iPad :

Well, lets get into the Point. The tip is nothing but using a Micro Sim for iPad, I just bought an iPad 2, couple of weeks back and i was thinking to use my Normal 3G sim as a micro sim on my iPad by cutting the conventional Sim into appropriate size using MicroSim-Cutter which is selling hot on eBay. By that time, someone informed me the availability of  Micro Sim for iPad provided by BSNL.

Finally, i visited the BSNL store and  i received the Microsim for 100 INR ( Sim cost + Activation Charge ). This includes 1GB of free Data Usage every month for next 6 months. For Unlimited data Usage, You have to Recharge with 999 INR ( 30 days validity ). I tested on my ipad and it works great after a couple of mins it gets activated.

Does Micro-Sim work on Mobiles/ Data Card ?

Amazingly, Yes it does !
BSNL-3G-micro-Sim-ipad
I tried using the same Micro Sim on my BSNL 3G Data card ( Teracom Manufacture ) and on my Android Mobile ( Xperia x10 mini ).
It works perfectly without any issues. Only thing you have to note is that you should take care while inserting the Micro Sim into your Mobile/ Datacard as the Sim Slot would be bigger in size than the Sim. Make sure, the Golden part of the Micro Sim gets into contact of the Sim Slot perfectly.

Warning :

1. Remember, you are buying the MicroSim for your iPad and not for normal Use, So ask for MicroSim to use on iPad to the BSNL Store keeper.
2. Sometimes, they might ask for IMEI number of your iPad to limit the usage of the Sim to particular device, try to escape from the situation with your intellectual skills 😉
3. However, the speed is comparatively way lesser than conventional 3G Sim. We will update the comparison of Internet Speed Test on both Sim’s in next article, Stay updated with us via mail instantly, subscribe to our Free Email updates.

    Hi! Siddharth R,

Your article is really helpful. I bought a micro sim today. I dont have any apple products. I want to use it on my 5800 nokia and usb data card. BSNL people do not have complete idea on micro sim. They even didnt give the number. How do i get the number of that sim? and recharge through online will work on micro sim? Also, tell me the time required for activation-(they said it will take around 6 hrs to get activated.)

    Hi,
i’m glad that it helped you..
In Micro-sim, when its activated, it selects a random number by itself and they will provide it to you.
If you donot get it, try sending sms as “DATA3G” to “53733” you will receive all details of your micro sim number.
yes you can recharge anywhere, however its suggested to ask them before doing so.
    > Usually it takes less than a hour, for activation !

Thx. A few hours later I purchased the sim, I got a call from customer care and provided the number. Currently its working on my data card. But not able to browse through my mobile. When i tried to browse through mobile n 5800, connecting signal appeared, but page never loaded. And after closing the browser, a pop message displays on the screen which shows the a/c balance and how much data used. Any idea, which part might went wrong?(APN: bsnlnet)

Its quite as compared to normal SIM, Its around 200-500 Kbps

    June 14, 2011 at 4:37 PM

If you want to use it only for data purpose , then you need not recharge it .. because just activation itself will gives you 1 GB / month for another 180 days…
it is working well with all unlocked USB 3G data cards & any 3G handsets ..

I am using bsnl 3G giving 98 Rs (around 3 GB for a month) by that old trick.
But in the middle of the pack the speed changes back to 2G. I am using the normal 2G bsnl sim in 3G datacard (teracom)
Do you have any trick to overcome this.

Yea, as said, only micro sim has special packs ( but you will get less speed than normal sim which u cut into small )

  33. Siddharth says

    September 16, 2011 at 9:58 PM

Nope, it isn’t possible with it, you need to get a new MicroSim.

  34. shone says

    September 18, 2011 at 7:45 AM

Actually there is a catch .The speed for the 3g connection will be automatically capped if we are not using it on an ipad. my connection speed dropped from 1 Mbps to 256kbps after i used it on a micromax datacard. you will have to call BSNL Customer care to reset the cap and they will ask for IPAD IMEI no.

    Hello Siddarth,

Thanks for the response. Yes my device is iPad3. I have both a pre paid iPad micro sim and a post paid 3g data card unlimited. Both work perfect with the internet. But both dont allow me to set the Personal Hotspot. In both the APN that I have used is bsnlnet.

I also spoke to BNSL officer and he has no clue even what is personal hotspot or tethering.

Also to let you know, when I put my Vodafone sim, I do get the option for personal hotspot.

If you have a solution do let me know.

I purchased a micro sim of BSNL recently in Pune and inserted it in my Asus Zenfone 5. The sim card is activated, recharged for 3G as well. But its not working in my phone. Is this a compatibility problem with the phone? As I understand it should not be. But still, I would like if you could help me out about the same. The network bars in the phone shows just a cross. Thanks.
