How to Setup Your Own Home VPN Server?

September 9, 2015 by Siddharth 2 Comments

Setting up Your Own VPN Server can be an effective way to save money you would otherwise have spent paying the VPN service provider. VPNs create a secured tunnel between your client system and the host system and thus any data that is transferred through this protected tunnel cannot be tampered or tracked. VPNs give you anonymity and security in a web world where everyone seems to track you. A VPN also enables you to log into a local network even if you are geographically away from it. It can be very useful particularly while traveling, as it gives you access to everything on web or on your home network even when you are on the go. It also supports other people connecting to your home network and thus makes it possible to give access to servers that you have hosted on your home network. If you are trying to get some information on how to Setup Your Own VPN Server read on the next part to have a clear idea about the options you have at hand and how to do it.

Setting up VPN Server with a router

Unless you are a tech geek and for you investigating into how to do it is not more important than reaching the final goal of establishing a workable VPN server on your own, your best option at hand is a router with VPN capabilities. These are a kind of pre-built solution and are available with most of the high-end home routers. Once you have a wireless router that provides VPN support you can easily use the web interface of the router for configuring and activating your VPN server. There are also different types of VPN‘s as you know and you should pick a router that supports the particular type of VPN that you want to establish and use.

Making dedicated VPN server

You can also use VPN server software on your own computer to make a dedicated VPN server. However, for this purpose you should use a system that you will keep online always usually with high speed internet connection. Simply install an OpenVPN server or a similar one in your computer. These are available for different operating systems; so pick the suite that matches with your needs. Once you have installed the VPN software just plug the right ports from your router to your computer that is running the server software. Both Windows and the server App of Apple allows setting up of a VPN server through built-in ways. So, you can also opt for that.

Hosting your own VPN server

This is another option if you are looking for how to Setup Your Own VPN Server. If you cannot spare to keep a system on 24×7, and at the same time you are not interested to pay for a VPN app, hosting your own VPN server can be a good idea. You can do that with a web hosting company. In this case you will have to pay the company for hosting a server, and you will use that server as a VPN server by installing your VPN software. Usually you need VPS or dedicated server to run your own VPN.

The process of hosting your VPN server with a web hosting provider can be just a simple one- click process, or an elaborate one including configuring everything from scratch, depending on the service provided by the hosting company. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of setting up one, you may also pick from one of the top vpn services in the industry and go with them. So the choice is yours!!

I’m going to have to see if my hosting account will allow me to host my own VPN. I don’t think I ever seen an option for it though, I’ll have to recheck when I get the chance. But anyway, nice work on this blog post update!
